The Christmas Season Is Upon Us

Wow, it's mid-December already and the snow has been falling quite steadily since December started. I'm busy with cookies and making lots of Christmas gift items to give this year. We're keeping things very simple. Most everything is handmade/homemade for gift giving and the only thing in excess in our home is Christmas music. I've always wanted to scale back with all the un-necessaries, but each year there seemed to be more piled on. This season, due to economic reasons, and the extra time on my hands, I've finally got the chance to home make almost everything. Cookies are about half done. Many, many crocheted pieces and gifts from my looms are done or in the works, and I'm feeling really good about that.
Has your Christmas season changed at all this year? Do you, like so many people I hear from want to simplify the holiday?

I think there's a new wave of "what's really important" going on. Simple might just be better.

Are we any happier with all the "stuff" ?

I've been surprised and very happy by the recent comments made at the last several craft/vendor shows I've been in. A lot of people are looking for handmade, unique gifts and more people are appreciating their "local" shops and sellers. For me shopping and spending local is sort of my way of "sticking it to the man." The Big Box stores, the everything from China for a dollar shops, where does it stop. Well, it has to start with where I spend My money.

So might I suggest you take a look at Etsy.com while shopping on the internet for holiday gear and gifts. A lot of really great handmade and vintage items there. Don't You Just Hate the Rush~~

I'm just venting a little, as I do this time each year. It just bothers me that we can't enjoy the Fall holiday of Thanksgiving at all before we have Christmas advertising and store "pushing" shoved at us. I just love the Thanksgiving holiday and all it stands for, but I guess in the "corporate" world, Thanksgiving just doesn't "draw" the big bucks like Christmas so they want to PUSH right past that pesky little holiday into "the big Christmas" spending.
I'd like to just sit back and enjoy the changing season, the beautiful colors, the thoughts of family gatherings, that start with Thanksgiving. There's plenty of time to enjoy the Christmas holiday starting the Friday after.
So, for me, I'm still in with all the shades of oranges, reds, yellows and the night time chill in the air.
Thoughts of turkey cooking, family laughing, the kids flying about, that's too important to just push right past. Sit back and savor it during this month of November. December will come soon enough.

Nesting Time~~~

Well, I've re-surfaced again, between my many projects to hopefully stay in touch with you all. Have been really busy working on Prayer Shawls, Fall/Thanksgiving home decor items and of course, warm and fuzzy cold weather accessories. Isn't it funny how when the weather starts to change, so many of us get into the "nesting" mode. I know I do, and many others I know get into the same, spruce up the home with fall colors, get into the warm and fuzzy mode, making the home ready for the cold weather hibernation season. I wonder how folks in the warm weather regions feel as the seasons change, though the seasons don't change as drastically as they do here in the northeast US. Do you get a sense of change? Does your home decor change with the seasonal weather changes? Being a decorator at heart, my home changes drastically between the cold weather and the warmer spring breezes coming back. My main rooms of the house go from light with pinks to warm browns and oranges each year.
So, as the nesting season is in full swing now, my creative mode changes to warming things. Comfy cozies. I've had a great time at the local fall craft shows so far and am changing gears into more of a thanksgiving/Christmas mode now. I love doing all these shows this time of year, the folks here are so receptive of my creative ideas, and I truly appreciate all their feedback. I've included a few pics of some of my warm and fuzzies here and will return soon with more. I have most of my items in my Etsy shop

Wow, It's mid September already, where have I been?
(asking myself this question) I needed to take an August sabbatical for family reasons and planned to return in early September. Things got pretty out of hand and I'm running 2 weeks behind my schedule, on the busiest time of the year for me, UGH. I get busy in the pre-fall season mostly because I love creating warm, comfort items and I can never get enough of my passion for vintage decorating, which creates double work days for me during the last months of each year. My home turns into a "yarn barn" from now until spring. I hope you'll follow my upcoming posts full of warm fuzzies, along with my vintage treasures.
By the way, my husband finally finished my 7 foot tri-loom while I was away and I'm so looking forward to sharing with you all the cool stuff I have planned for that new gadget.

A Cute Little Re-Make In Progress

Hello, happy Monday. I'd like to start off the week with a little peak into my studio work. As you know I'm an avid "vintage treasure hunter", but sometimes I run into a piece that is just dying for a re-make. A piece that will find it's way into a home if it gets a make over. I see so many pieces like this in my travels. Instantly, upon first glance I see potential in something and just have to bring it to life. A new life. In a new home where it will once again be appreciated and admired.

This is just one piece I happen to have handy pictures of, that I've just finished. I have several more in the finishing stages that I will share with you all also.

This little old stand came from a church rummage sale in late June. I knew right away a white wash would make it so much more appealing. I could think of several spots a cute little shabby shelf like that would look just perfect~ So I grabbed it for $1 I think it was! And home to my shop it went. After a quick sand, it sopped up many coats of white paint. Old wood gets thirsty of course. Then to decide how to give it "that look". I'm partial to the shabby-cottage style roses and colors. I was able to get a great antique looking set of rose decals locally and decided to use them on the two lower shelves leaving the top bare, figuring that most often the main focal piece is setting on the top. I then applied the decals followed by several coats of a varnish I yellowed with a drop of food coloring. (little tip there for any of you that have the want to try something like this yourself). Letting this sit to try for a couple of days, it was now ready for display. Pictured I have a few ideas of how I envisioned the piece the fist time I saw it sitting in the corner of the rummage sale.

So next time your out and about at a garage sale, rummage sale or local flea market. Take a minute to think about that lonely little awkward piece in the corner no one seems to notice. A few little touch ups can turn it into something everyone will notice!

Trying To Keep Up In This Crazy Hot Weather

Hello all! Hope your staying cool. This has been an extremely hot stretch of weather for us here in Pittsburgh. Too many days over the 90 degree mark and very humid. I have a problem keeping my studio space cool enough to work in when temps get this high, and have been trying to keep up the pace, but must admit I'm not doing that well. I've spent more time with my recently acquired decorating books than with my recently acquired decorating items to get ready to put up in our shop. I'm a book-a-holic I must admit, and decorating books have always been my number one choice. I'll post a best of list sometime soon and maybe we can all share our favorites!

I didn't hit a single flea, or estate sale this weekend (some were cancelled due to the heat) and am feeling a little of the withdraw symptoms of that. So I'm pulling up a few pic's from my stock to share with you today. These were put in our Etsy shop this week. Stop in if you'd like more information on them.

Let's hope this coming week brings a little relief in the temperatures. Have several projects to share with you all. Have a safe and happy Sunday!

I'd like your opinions on this great find I made at a local church flea last week. I picked this piece up knowing I could really do something unique with this linen find. My thoughts were at first, some kind of accent pillow? Then upon looking at it at home I think it's way to large for that. I'm not much on fabric wall hangings so that's probably out. Maybe someone out there can throw some creative ideas my way! I love it but I'm stumped??

I'm writing again today to ask you, followers and stoppers by, to please be patient with my lack of "techno" skills as I am trying to get this blog in some kind of appealing to the eye order. Technology is really not my thing. Decorating IS. I've loved the idea of decorating since I was quite young. My memory takes me back to around age 12 when I remember clipping and snipping pictures out of the Sears catalog, any mailings that might have come to the house, perhaps even a magazine. My mom was not big on magazine subscriptions so it was a rare treat to get one in that I could cut apart to create my "dream decorating" album. I'd glue and paste onto papers that went into an old 3 ring binder. Then categorize all the clippings. I've always been drawn to creating a perfect home. That is why I consider myself so fortunate to be able to do what I am doing in my life now. I love collecting pieces that will eventually be "that perfect piece" for someone. I so enjoy getting the perfect pictures of each item. Researching vintage pieces and re-making some into totally new and unique decor items. Life is good when your following your hearts desires.

Hello everyone. First let me thank any new visitors. Love to have you stop in! Have been preparing several items to list in our Etsy shop "Vintagetreasurehntr" and wanted to give you a sneak peek at a couple of them. Just love these items I've picked to show off. I really think they are unique and worth a special look. The carousel horses will be sold individually, though they look great in a group. The "shabby" memo board is a favorite of mine. I think I'll make one for myself actually! The memo board will be listed in the "shabby-cottage chic" section of our shop. This is a new section, and I have a number of items waiting to get pictured and listed there. When I have that complete (very soon) I'll be hosting our fist giveaway contest, so keep posted on that.

New Camera Time

Well I finally broke down and purchased a new camera. I've played with two other digital cameras for quite awhile trying to get the quality photos I wanted and got nothing but frustrated. Amazing how this new technology keeps improving. So today I just wanted to share some of my play time with this new gadget. It took me all night last night to just figure out how to use some of the functions. This morning, with coffee in hand, I started shooting away at some of my treasures. I've been waaay too busy here and neglecting my page, I'm so sorry about that. I've been working on a new section in my Etsy shop. Shabby-Cottage-Chic. Can't wait to bring you all the "grand opening" soon. I will be hosting my very first giveaway too. I will be posting details within the coming week so please be sure to keep an eye out for that.
I've been traveling the area trying to hit all the rummage, estate and flea sales here, and there are many this time of year. I've picked up some real treasures and have been hard at work researching, prepping and trying to organize them all.
I've also been putting together a little website to showcase the items, inspiring ideas and maybe a few tutorials if I can manage that all by myself??? I'm in no way "tech" savvy and doing website work is very time consuming for me. Bear with me, I will have a link up soon.

Another Great Rummage Sale Weekend

There have been a lot of great vintage and antique items out on the rummage circuit this year. I'm just in heaven. We are finding tons of great stuff to start up our "Shabby/Cottage Decor" section on our Etsy shop. We will officially announce it's grand opening soon and will have a great little contest for everyone who stops by to check out all the beautiful goodies!

Any of you who know me well, this is my passion, shabby/vintage, victorian, etc. I can't get enough. Wheather it's collecting at flea's and rummage/estate slaes, or reading endlessly the new books out on the subject, I was born to "treasure hunt". I'm in love with old lovingly used stuff. Salvage should have been my middle name. Anyway, stay tuned for a future post about the contest for the "big" grand opening coming soon. Until then, save a lovingly used item from the landfill. Vintage Clutch Re-Make

I was gifted this beautiful off white (maybe ivory) clutch to work with not to long ago. It really is a beautiful clutch. Easily several decades vintage status. The problem is water marks on the front and back??? As always, I look at these pieces and love them too much to discard them. I had just got a lot of beautiful fabrics scraps and surely one would match this piece. Surely this piece was not meant for the trash heap! And, as luck would have it (and it always does) I had a beautiful piece of ivory upholstery fabric just purchased at a church rummage sale. Once again the Upcycle angels are with me! I carefully removed and replaced the back and front with on piece of this gorgeous fabric and waa laa. Now can I save the beading?? How about a nice button accent??? Oh my, never ending decisions on every piece I do. I proceeded to carefully cut away at the fabric around the beautiful beading from the front piece I removed.

So now I can't decide which way to finish this clutch?

Simple and elegant with just the button? or

A little more bling with the original beading?

Any one care to help me decide?

Finally Finished Up Weddings for May

Wow, what a busy couple weeks! Just now have our May 22nd wedding packed up and put away. (breathing heavy sigh here) It really rained all day Saturday and the set up was crazy. Thoroughly soaked by the time we were done, but it was well worth it. The reception site was beautiful. It all came together beautifully and the bride and groom were very happy with how it all looked. I have some set up pictures attached here and more coming from the photographer. My love of art, crafts and preserving our Earth has led me to start my "Upcycling" business. I love to re-create pieces from leftovers and discarded items, sort of like recycling fashion with many of my pieces. The satisfaction I get from re-using something potentially wasteful in a new and exciting way, well I've determined this to be my calling.
A lot of people haven't heard the term upcycling. So here's a brief definition:
Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless items into new materials or products. I think that's how Wikipedia defines it.
The benefit of Upcycling is that it diverts materials from landfills and reduces the need for virgin materials to be produced (or bought) at the same time.
Buying green doesn't mean sacrificing style or quality. If you haven't visited Etsy or Zibbet you need to. You'll see how so many beautiful pieces are "re-created" everyday.

Crazy Weekend

Had a very busy weekend. Visited a local area ghost town to do some metal dectecting, which was quite a hike! No good treasures to report unfortunatley.

Anyway, had a computer crash Thursday and had to invest in a new PC so got that up and running so we're good to blog!

I am working on several items to keep building inventory for my Etsy and Zibbet shops. I'm hoping to get pictures done and up on the sites by tomorrow evening. Will keep you all posted on my progress. I'll be doing the Lawrenceville Little Flea (check out the FB Post ) this coming Saturday (May 1st) so let's pray for good weather and a good time! Well, today's the day I've dedicated myself to start Blogging on a daily basis. Have been wanting to do this since I started this blog page but somehow could not structure it into my daily routine! After some inspiration from Handmade Marketer and Tara Gentile of Scoutie Girl http://www.scoutiegirl.com/ I've decided to get this going. They, and others I follow on Facebook and Twitter offer such great advice on writing blogs and keeping things rolling with good ideas on what to blog about.

This is my new "favorite" I Upcycled two pockets from an old pair of jeans to make this cute little purse. Needle felted several "earthy" symbols to add to the cool look of this piece. Felting Work

Just finishing up a custom piece for a 50th wedding anniversary. I'm using a needle felting tenique in a picture frame about a 11 x 17" size. Will post pictures soon!

UPDATE 2/11 from Pgh! SNOW.....enough already.
I have Valentine cards for meals-on-wheels stranded all over town at this point. My original plan was to deliver them today and that is not going to happen. I have contacted the senior centers and meals on wheels centers I worked on this with and they too are snowed and and for the most part shut down as of today. There will be some celebrating the holiday next week so I am still going to get the cards out, It will just be a little late. (but what isn't in town this week!) Please contact me if you have cards or still will have time to make them over the weekend. We will work something out to get them collected and distributed. I did get a large batch sent to the Hazelwood meals folk already. Thanks to all who are working on this with me. I appreciate everyones patience!

Snowed In In Pittsburgh!

We've been snowed in here in Pgh since Friday 2/5 and it has hampered our Valentines for meal-on-wheels folks here in the area.
We are building up our stack of Valentines cards though slowly but it's coming along.
They are forecasting more snow starting tomorrow 2/9 and thru the next few days. Not a good situation but we'll get by just like we always have.

I just got a call this morning asking for more cards for another Meals-On-Wheels location here in town. Will need as much help as we can put together. They can be handmade,homemade or store bought. Handmade is not a requirement! Just spreading a little smile to a senior is all that is intended. Many of these people are shut it, especially in the winter months, so this can really make their day.

Pittsburgh Artists and Etsians NEED HELP

To all Pittsburgh Area Etsians and Handmade Artist:
I'm putting together a "local Valentines Day Drive" for Valetines Day cards for our Senior Citizens. I've contacted several local meals-on-wheels and centers that serve meals to local seniors. I'm wanting to collect as many Valentine greetings to give them with their meals for the holiday. You may have seen this similiar post on Etsy for New York City seniors, but I would like to propose a local Pittsburgh drive! I'm looking for any local feedback in the next couple days and will post mailing information soon. Any kind of card will do, handmade, store bought if your not driven to hand make a card. Get the family involved, kids love this kind of thing!
I will collect them and distribute them here in Pittsburgh the Friday before (This year Valentines Day is Sunday) Stay tuned for more information!!
